St. Brendan’s went into this game with a point to prove after Athlone had beaten them earlier in the competition 5-3. St. Brendan’s have never won the under 19 title in their history. The game was always going to be a very competitive encounter.

St. Brendan’s were straight out of the blocks. A wonderful clearance from Pat Gilligan reached Jake Hart who played a beautiful ball for Shane Murtagh to snatch his first goal of the game. Soon after, Johnny Corboy struck a wonderful effort from way outside the box to give St. Brendan’s a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes of play.

From the very first minute of the game, St. Brendan’s looked to be in complete control of the game.  St. Brendan’s played high intensity football throughout the whole 90 minutes. Athlone had chances but were unable to capitalise. Late into the first half Jake Hart was fouled inside the box earning St. Brendan’s a penalty which Johnny Corboy dispatch with venom. The second half began with Athlone applying pressure to St. Brendan’s defence. However the failed to pierce the St. Brendan’s resolute defence. On the 75th minute sub DJ Mcloughlin set up Daniel O’Donoghue to make it 4-0 and in the space of 10 minutes St. Brendan’s had scored 3 more. Scores from Shane Murtagh, DJ McLoughlin and Captain Johnny Corboy (hat trick). The match finished 7 – 0, with victory to St. Brendan’s Community School. Huge congratulations to everybody involved in this huge win and best of luck in the next round.
